California’s longest running AQHA Ranch Horse Versatility event is now a Ranching Heritage Challenge and a Golden State Versatility Ranch Horse Association sanctioned event. The Central Coast Ranch Horse Classic spans two days, with all divisions in all three shows competing on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday classes are Cutting, Trail & Ranch Riding, and Sunday classes are Reining, Cow Work and Conformation. Since the three shows run concurrently, enter more than one show for a much reduced fee and earn points in multiple organizations.
Both the Versatility Ranch Horse (VRH) and Ranching Heritage Challenge (RHC) shows are for registered quarter horses only. This means that riders on AQHA registered horses can earn points in Open, Amateur, Limited Amateur, or Level 1 (Rookie), Youth, Limited Youth, or Level 1 Youth. Additionally, participants may opt to enter individual classes and can earn AQHA points for that class only. The GSVRHA show is open to any horse and sanctioned by the Western States Versatility Ranch Horse Association. So you do not need to ride a registered quarter horse to participate! This show is also open to individual class entries. The Ranching Heritage Show is open only to horses that are Ranching Heritage eligible. We hope you will enter and also bring your friends and family. We’ve a great judge, good food and a beautiful setting for these exciting events.
Prizes will be awarded to Champion, Reserve Champion and Runner Up in the Open, Amateur, Limited Amateur, Level 1 (Rookie) and Youth divisions. Additionally, there will be First Place awards for class winners in the VRH and RHC shows. Divisional winners in the GSVRHA show will also receive a prize. Finally, awards will be offered for the high point junior horse (3-5 years old), select rider (60 years and older), and Limited Open rider. These subdivisions must be entered and indicated on the entry blank for a nominal fee.

This is a stock horse clinic to educate competitors as to the perspective of the judge’s viewpoint and how this relates to the scoring process. This clinic will begin with a discussion of what the judge observes as you enter the arena; guiding principles of the judge; the intricacies of the points and penalties associated with your performance. As if in a show ring event, participants will perform a reining pattern and then work the mechanical cow. After each rider, the scores will be posted and the judge’s interpretation and critique is offered. These observations will reflect your horse’s temperament and disposition and offer suggestions for you to unify and improve your partnership with your horse. After all participants have had an individual session, there will be a question and comment period. This will be followed by a short break and a second go-round without any breaks between riders.
