Open to all riders and horses. This class is judged on the ability of the horse to work a cow. This is demonstrated by separating a numbered cow from the herd, driving it to the middle of the arena and holding it. Exhibitor must work their designated cow, and one additional non-numbered cow, within the time limit. Time will begin when a rider crosses a pre-determined and marked time line, just prior to entering the herd. Cattle numbers will be announced prior to crossing the starting line. Unnecessary roughness or disturbing the herd excessively could result in disqualification. Horses will not be penalized for reining during the cutting portion, but should display natural ability. Equipment to follow AQHA rules. If a horse is shown in the bridle/two-rein, the competitor may only use one hand. Each time the second hand is used, there will be ½ point deduction accessed. Two (2) minute time limit.
Two-Man Ranch Sorting
Open to all riders and horses. This is a timed event designed to replicate what a working ranch crew would do if they needed to sort cattle from a herd and pen those cattle for branding or shipping. Two-person team sorts 8-10 cattle in consecutive order. Team drives the cattle from one 45′ corral into another. The starting number is called out as riders cross from the middle section into the herd area. Teams are given a ‘no time’ if any other cow crosses into center or any sorted cattle come back to the herd. Time ends when the last cow goes through gate. If, during a run, the cattle are not handled in a manner conducive to good ranch practices, the team will be flagged out. This decision is at the discretion of the Judge. Open to all riders and horses. This is a timed event. Two-person teams send a cow through a number of “obstacles” in the arena, using panels as mock gates. The cow can go through each gate no more than 2 times, backwards or forwards. The team must also get the cow out of the arena before time is up. “Communication” for this event means talking, whistling, hand gestures, etc. Warning horn to be given at the 30 second mark. Three Divisions: ► Adult + 9-12 Youth (Both partners can communicate), ► Adult + 13-17 Youth (Only the youth partner can communicate) and ► Adult + Adult (No communication allowed). Two-and-a-half (2.5) minute time limit.
Open to all riders and horses. This is a judged event. This class contains a course of obstacles and is designed to show a horse’s willingness and ability to perform several tasks that might be asked of him in the course of a normal day’s ranch work. It may include obstacles such as crossing a bridge, dragging a log or picking up a slicker. Riders should be prepared to catch, bridle and mount their horse. Mounting block will be provided. Riders should also be prepared to perform gait transitions.
Open to all riders and horses. This is a judged event. This class is based on the AQHA’s class of the same name. This is NOT a peanut-rolling class, but a class that reflects the versatility, attitude and movement of a working horse. The horse’s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse. Required movements include the walk, jog and lope in both directions; the extended jog and lope in at least one direction; stops; and a turn to change direction. Three of the following maneuvers must be included: sidepass; turns of 360 degrees or more; change of lead (simple or flying); walk, jog or lope over a pole(s); or any other reasonable combination of maneuvers that a ranch horse would perform. Three-Man Calf Doctoring
This is a judged three-man event where each team has to cut, rope and mark a calf. The arena will have two barrels at about 1/3 of the arena. The time starts when the first rider passes the starting line. Riders will cut one of the numbered cattle out of the herd. Only one person may be in the herd at a time; however, his teammates can provide turn-back. Once cut, the designated cow must be moved between the two barrels. The cow may not return to the herd once brought through the barrels. If this happens, you get no time. Header cannot throw loop until cow has passed though the barrels. The designated cow can then be heeled, but must be kept in the far 2/3 of the arena. The “doctor” and sets the ropes (both front and hind feet) and places a mark on the cow between its eyes using a stock crayon. The “doctor” will raise both hands to signal end of time. You can and will be flagged out for any unnecessary roughness. Three (3) minute time limit.
Junior / Senior Roping
At least one member must be 17 & under. Rope one head. Pick your own ground crew. Fastest time wins. Three (3) minute time limit.
Ladies / Mixed Roping
Team to consist of two women or one man and one woman. Rope one head. Pick your own ground crew. Team to rope one head from herd of ten numbered cattle. Number to be drawn by ropers as they enter the pen. Fastest time wins. Three (3) minute time limit.
Open to all horses and riders. Two team members to rope two head from herd of ten numbered cattle, while other members work the ground. Numbers to be drawn by ropers as they enter the pen. Ropers and ground crew swap for the second go round. Fastest combined times win. Three (3) minute time limit.
This is a judged event. Competitor MUST use a reata. Horses to be in hackamore, 2 rein or straight-up in the bridle; romals are required. Team to rope two sequentially numbered head from herd of ten numbered cattle. Numbers will be announced as ropers enter the pen. Cattle may be roped in any order. This event is not a trick roping or fast time contest. Judge(s) are looking for the “perfect shot for the situation at hand.” Competitors will be judged in five criteria: Horsemanship, Stock Handling, Suitability, Style/Difficulty and Execution of the shot. Awards for Best Team, Best Head Loop and Best Heel Loop. Five (5) minute time limit.
Open to all riders and horses. This is a judged event. NOTE: If you enter this class, you are not allowed to enter the Buckaroo Class. Enter arena and execute dry work. Accept the cow. Show control by boxing the cow. Take the cow down the fence, making at least one good turn each way. Take down rope, track and rope cow. You are allowed two loops. Pen cow for removal of rope. Pattern will be selected by the Judge from the AQHA patterns for Versatility or Working Cow Horse. This is a judged event. May enter two horses if class limit has not been reached. Equipment to follow AQHA rules. Six (6) minute time limit.
Open to all riders and horses. This is a judged event. NOTE: If you enter this class you are not allowed to enter the Ranch Horse Class. This class is for riders who have not shown down the fence in competition. Enter arena and execute dry work pattern which will be selected by the Judge from the AQHA patterns for Versatility or Working Cow Horse. Accept the cow. Show control by boxing the cow. Must box cow for 50 seconds. Judge will signal when boxing time is completed. Equipment to follow AQHA rules. Four (4) minute time limit.
Open to all riders and horses. The horse is judged on movement and attitude as he is guided through a pattern. The pattern typically requires the horse to perform a number of stops, spins, rollbacks, lead changes and circles at a lope. The horse should be willing to be guided with little or no resistance. Pattern will be selected by the Judge from the AQHA patterns for Versatility or Working Cow Horse. Equipment to follow AQHA rules.
Open to riders aged 12 and under only. This class is offered to encourage our most junior riders. The entry cost is a little less and prizes are more modest than the regular Reining class. There are no equipment restrictions and the judge will be instructed to place the class regardless of off-course, etc. Upon registration, each entrant will be sent the pattern to be used to practice ahead of time. Note that this class does not have a payback and does not contribute to Youth High Point.
